Questions from the workshop

Nordic Woodcraft Explained

Useful distinctions for readers of buildings and objects. These answers introduce the subject; they do not replace advice for a particular structure.

Is every Nordic timber house a log house?

No. Regional traditions include solid log walls, post-and-plank construction, timber frames and modern insulated assemblies. Outer cladding does not reliably identify the structure.

Are Scandinavian and Nordic interchangeable?

Not precisely. Scandinavia commonly refers to Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Nordic region also includes Finland and Iceland, alongside its other constituent territories. This folio names the relevant country or region.

Are traditional joints always metal-free?

No. Shaped wood joints, wooden pegs and iron or steel fasteners have different roles and may occur together. A joint's appearance does not establish its age or structural capacity.

What is the difference between glulam and CLT?

Glulam typically bonds layers with grain aligned along a member, making beams and columns. Cross-laminated timber typically alternates grain direction between layers to make panels. Product-specific design remains necessary.

Does timber automatically mean low carbon?

No. Sourcing, processing, quantities, service life, replacement and end-of-life assumptions all matter. Stored biogenic carbon is one part of an assessment, not a complete verdict.

Does a timber building need no fire protection because wood chars?

No. Charring can be part of a fire design, but connections, adhesives, linings, compartmentation and the whole-building strategy also matter. Applicable regulations and qualified design govern a project.

Can a weathered surface tell me whether wood is rotten?

Not by itself. Surface colour and texture do not establish internal condition. Moisture investigation and an appropriately qualified inspection may be needed, especially for load-bearing timber.

What should I ask about certified timber?

Ask which scheme and claim apply, whether the certificate is valid and in scope, and how the claim connects to your supplied product. Certification does not replace technical assessment or whole-life environmental analysis.

Is reclaimed timber ready to use structurally?

Not automatically. Damage, previous use, coatings and uncertain grading can affect suitability. Inspection and a competent structural assessment may be needed before reuse.

Can I build from the joint diagrams on this site?

No. The diagrams explain principles only. They omit dimensions, loads, material grades, fastening requirements and project-specific checks. Use qualified design and appropriate craft training for real work.
